Dover Wine Club: Lebanon

This month we take a look at the wines of Lebanon

Lebanon is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, with a winemaking history that dates back over 5,000 years to the Phoenicians. Despite its small size, Lebanon boasts a dynamic wine industry centered in the Bekaa Valley, a high-altitude plateau with ideal conditions for viticulture—abundant sunshine, cool nights, and well-drained soils.

Modern Lebanese wine blends tradition with French influence, especially from Bordeaux and Rhône. The most common red grape varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Cinsault, and Carignan, while whites often feature Obeidi (an indigenous grape), Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay.
